5 awesome automotive April Fools’ Day pranks

Cape Town – It is that time of the year again when the world pulls pranks and manufacturers try to put one over people’s eyes. Yes, it’s April Fools’!

We scanned the Internet for some pranks and listed (and scored) five that we think are pretty awesome.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we did compiling it!

1. Subaru SA promotes using social media while driving (4/5)

Subaru launched a new piece of tech that allows drivers to engage with their social media followers while driving their vehicles. The technology, called Social Integration Drive, uses steering wheel controls and full HD cameras to make instant social media updates possible.

With a front-facing 9MP camera in the rear view mirror and a reverse camera in the rear bumper, drivers can now capture HD photos and videos and preview it on the vehicle’s infotainment system before sharing it. Voice recognition eliminates the need to type captions.

Driving with both hands firmly planted to the steering wheel is important, but this new feature from Subaru allows you to do perhaps the most important thing of all: staying connected! All this while keeping your eyes on the road.

The future is here!

Available from April 1st, the system will be standard on all vehicles sold in SA, as part of the Subaru April Fools Imaginative campaign.

2. Ford’s Engine Listeners (4/5)

A new and very important job opportunity just opened up at Ford, but unfortunately all positions have been filled. The position of “engine listener” requires the employee to be in a soundproof room and listening to a range of engines for any imperfections.

The candidates apparently went through a very stringent selection process, whereby all of their senses were tested under rigorous conditions. These tests included wine tasting, tuning pianos for concerts, looking at a magnifying glass through a magnifying glass, and even touching a range of surfaces and materials while being blind-folded with a lollipop in their mouths. Rigorous!

The most important engine the successful candidates will have to listen to is that of the Ford Focus RS. They have to listen to the engine with a stethoscope for any impurities deep inside the engine. Up to 2000 tests can be carried out on a single day.

Juan Carlos Rosmari, quality technician at the Valencia engine plant, said: “The experience of hearing thousands of engines allows us to sense straight away when something is not working perfectly.

“Each different engine type has its own unique sound, and from listening to them in the test cells we get to know their individual characters – and the tell-tale signs which indicate a problem.”

The candidates’ contracts expires at the end of the business day on April 1st, 2016.

3. Honda to roll out emoji number plates (3/5)

Honda is doing its utmost best to shake off its reputation of being an old man’s car and have in recent years have come up with products that are doing just that. The latest being the Civic Type R. But now the Japanese firm have taken it one step further and are now introducing emoji number plates on their vehicles.

This is the first step in making their vehicles more individualistic – something that is appealing to the younger buyer they are targeting. This new trend will be launched in early 2017 and the first market to receive it will be the UK. Honda already held talks with the country’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.

It is not just for fun and games that Honda are doing it. They’ve conducted research into the matter at hand and found that 96% of the respondents aged under thirty preferred emoji number plates over conventional plates.

97% of the above-mentioned 96% indicated that emojis are their main method of expressing an emotion, feeling or idea.

Honda approved the new project at 00:00 on April 1, 2016, and is hoping that this new plan will make them cool with their target audience.

4. Ford rolling out ingenious technology on April 1 (5/5)

Ever traveled somewhere and suddenly the kids start acting like, well, kids? Ford understands your situation, your predicament, your pain and suffering. But importantly, Ford understands the importance of quieting the kids down before they reach that dreaded level: anarchy.

In conjunction with Ford’s SYNC communication and entertainment system, drivers are now able to engage CALM mode by simply activating a switch on the steering wheel. CALM – Child Anarchy Layoff Mode – automatically reduces the noise levels for a quieter, more enjoyable ride.

The technology used is similar to what can be found in the automaker’s Active Noise Control system, which reduces/eliminates unwanted sound waves from the audio system.

CALM is aimed at reducing high-pitched noises that small children emit, but Ford is also hard at work in developing a system for lower frequencies called “mother-in-law”.

CALM is available on all new and second-hand Fords from April 1.

5. MINI offers PEE as standard (3/5)

In what is a bold and daring move for the British-German marque, MINI now offers the option of scissor doors to all their models, with the added safety feature of ‘Pyrotechnic Emergency Exit’, or PEE, if you will.

These doors were originally only scheduled for the three-door, Paceman, and Convertible MINI’s, but it will now be available on the Countryman, too, from next year onwards.

The scissor doors open vertically and should, in all likelihood, ease exiting/entering the car in tight spaces. The doors can be opened via a remote control, a button on the door handle, or the MINI Excitement app.

In the unfortunate case of an accident, the doors will be blasted off its hinges, ensuring that you are saved in a nick of time.

‘Google Glass for Your Windshield’ Keeps Your Eyes on the Road – BY KARISSA BELLAUG

Navdy-1

While connected car systems like Apple‘s CarPlay aim to be an extension of your smartphone’s display on your car’s dashboard, a new startup is taking an approach that is much more like Google Glass than systems that use touchscreens and buttons.

Navdy aims to bring drivers the same notifications and information as connected car systems like Android Auto and CarPlay, without requiring users to take their eyes off the road.

Driving with Navdy is a lot like using Google Glass. Similar to aheads-up display, the device projects a transparent display on your windshield to show maps, notifications and music apps. The display is designed so the content is focused out six feet in front of you so drivers can easily view the display.

Navdy CTO and cofounder Karl Guttag said he doesn’t believe existing in-car solutions really provide a safer solution.

“It’s obvious that touchscreens and nobs and buttons all force you to take your eyes off the road,” he told Mashable. “Theres a lot of opportunity to improve that whole experience and make the whole experience safer and more natural and intuitive.”

Although other systems, including CarPlay, include some voice control, they are primarily based on conventional dashboard input.

Navdy focuses six feet in front of you so you can view the display without taking your eyes off the road,

Guttag said the company also focused a lot improving the experience of switching between apps, so phone calls and other notifications won’t interrupt navigation.

Navdy relies completely on voice and gesture-based controls; drivers can also fine-tune the types of notifications they receive. They can elect to only receive SMS and social media notifications while the car is stopped, for example, or turn off those types of notifications completely.

At launch, it will be compatible with Google Maps, music apps and communication apps like messaging, phone and social media apps. While you won’t be able to browse Facebook while you drive, Navdy will be able to orate text messages and notifications from social media apps, if those notifications are enabled.

On the navigation side, it will ship with support for Google Maps, but the company says it will be adding support for other map apps like Waze or Apple Maps in the future.

Guttag and cofounder Doug Simpson acknowledge that laws around using smartphones in the car vary in different states and countries, emphasizing that it’s up to drivers to follow their local laws. But they say using Navdy is safer than glancing at a smartphone or in-dash screen because drivers can always see what’s in front of them.

ISUZU KB MIDNITE EDITION LAUNCHED

by Wilhelm Lutjeharms on 20/08/2014

In an effort to put some focus on GMSA’s Isuzu KB range, the company has launch the KB Midnite Edition. As can be seen in the pictures above, the Midnite Edition is based on the KB 300, but sports several, darker, updates.

The run of only 500 bakkies are offered in three external colours, red, white and silver. At the front of the bakkie there is also a new updated bumper. The black theme continues to include the mirror caps, roof rails, side steps, window surrounds and also the 17-inch alloy wheels.

Viewed from the rear, there is a black sportsbar behind the cabin which includes “Midnite Edition” decals. In true sports car fashion, each vehicle will receive a special plaque indicating its production number out of 500.

Although all vehicles will be offered with the 3,0-litre, D-TEQ engine (130 kW/380 N.m), buyers will have the choice between a five-speed manual gearbox with a 4×4 drivetrain, or a five-speed automatic transmission with a 4×2 drivetrain.

As with all Isuzu KB products, the Midnite Edition comes with a 5-year/90 000 km service plan. However, it only goes on sale in September and GMSA hasn’t made the price available yet.

A right-hand drive Mustang for SA? Believe it!

• New Mustang headed for 120 countries

 • Available in right-hand-drive
 • Iconic Mustang headed for SA in 2015

PRETORIA, South Africa – For the first time in Ford’s iconic muscle car’s history, a right-hand drive Mustang will roll off the assembly line.

The RHD Mustang will see the classic  pony car exported to more than 25 right-hand-drive markets around the world, including South Africa in 2015.

Earlier in 2014, Ford engineers finished construction of the first right-hand-drive sixth-generation Mustang. The prototype will be used to conduct various development tests ahead of car’s global launch.

9.2-MILLION SOLD SINCE 1964

The United States remains the largest market for the Mustang, with more than 9.2-million sales since the car’s debut in 1964. Ford reports that 161 000 Mustangs have been sold outside of the US.

In 2012, more than 4000 were sold in 35 countries outside of the USA, including the United Arab Emirates, Chile and the Philippines.

The sixth generation Mustang is available in 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo, 3.7-litre V6 and 5-litre V8 derivatives.

50 YEARS OF MUSTANG

The sixth-generation Mustang is the latest member of a very exclusive club – vehicles in continuous production for 50 years.

The car has a worldwide base of fans, including more than 7.6-million on Facebook – the most, according to Ford, of “any vehicle nameplate”.

Ford said: “From the beginning, Mustang’s unique combination of style, performance and affordability established an entirely new class of sporty cars, and it has led the segment since.”

The sixth-generation Mustang will make its way to South Africa in 2015. Ford South Africa announced that it will open pre-orders for the all-new Mustang in January 2015. Details will be released closer to launch date.

Hot Ride Shootout: WE HAVE A CHAMPION

Image

Good Afternoon ladies and gentlemen, the time has come to announce the winner for this year’s Hot Ride Shootout. This knockout competition has been welcomed by you guys and we would like to thank you for all the support you have given us over the last 7 /8 weeks. We hoped you enjoyed it and next one will have a different spin on things so watch out.

This year’s winner had an extremely tough road to the final and then to win it against what I thought was going to take it hands down, it has definitely punched above its weight class. It quashed the dreams of other super rides along way and in the end defeating both the old Honda Civic and then the new Honda Civic Type R to claim the title. Before the final round it impressively knocked out the Subaru WRX STI as well as the Mitsubishi Evo, so we believe that the Opel Extreme OPC has had a hell of a tournie and is the deserved winner.

Until next time guys keep well and don’t forget to follow our blog to stay tuned.

THE FINAL!! Opel OPC vs Honda Civic TypeR

Image

So we are finally here, the finals of Hot Ride Shootout 2014. It has been one awesome ride featuring 16 cars, you guys deciding who goes forward in the compo and who gets the boot.

There have been some interesting decisions by you and now we can reveal the 2 finalists. These 2 have matched up against some stiff competition. You complained about some Hot Rides not being making the grade. They’re gone!!

You voiced your displeasure at some of the match ups, well the losers, they too are gone.

One-by-one, you’ve weeded out the also-rans and pretenders to whittle our field of 16 down to the Final. Since you’ve come this far, it’s your civic duty as a nitro-breathing, gasoline-bleeding gearhead to finish the mission of naming our 2014 Hot Ride Shootout champion.

But just so you know, things are about to get trickier. Take a look at the pairings and make your call.

Finalist 1: OPEL Astra OPC Extreme
It’s all racer when it comes to the Opel Astra OPC Extreme details. Its 2.0-litre turbocharged motor has been tuned and is good for no less than 225 kW according to Opel. This engine is now the most powerful four-pot unit ever made by the manufacturer. It’s interesting to note that tuners have been getting big power out of these motors for a while, and 225 kW really isn’t that big a number. However the car has been put on a diet and is 100kg lighter than its normal counterpart, which gives it a dynamic edge.

Carbon composite is used extensively in the Opel Astra OPC Extreme. The material is used for the aerodynamically-optimized rear wing, the diffuser, front spoiler, hood, suspension cross-bracing, the engine cover, complete wheels, rear wheelhouse ventilation and roof. The carbon wheels are 20kg lighter than their aluminium counterparts. Gone is the steel roof and in its place is a carbon fibre version. That alone saves just over 6.5kg. As Lotus cars demonstrate on a regular basis, light weight equals high performance.

Haven’t made up your mind yet? Watch the Opel Extreme Video here: http://youtu.be/LMkEjc8CBTM

Finalist 2: Honda Civic Type R

Onto the Honda, you’ve seen the teaser sketch. Now there’s this – the official Honda Civic Type R concept, released at the Geneva motor show. But unlike some of the more far – fetched concepts you’ll see, Honda says this design study ‘strongly hints’ at the production version, which it’s promising in 2015.

You want specs? You can’t handle the specs. The new Type R will be the first model to feature the company’s brand-spanking VTEC turbo engine. It’ll come as a 2.0-litre, direct injection, four-cylinder unit that’ll make at least 280bhp. Blimey.

So, what about that Veneno – like styling? Honda says it offers real performance benefits, which it’s actually tested – the front and rear spoilers adds down force, the vertical side wings and vents in the front bumper help to reduce drag and control airflow around the front tyres, and the front grilles have been enlarged for better cooling. The front and rear wings have also been pulled out to accommodate bigger wheels.

For Honda and its fans, Type R represents its “racing spirit,” which is the company’s corporate philosophy of using motorsport to drive innovation and foster teamwork. Honda’s a company with a rich racing heritage, spanning almost half a century at the highest echelons of motorsport. The Civic iteration of Type R has always been the mainstay of the Type R badge.

Semi Final 2: Honda Civic TypeR vs BMW M 135i

Image

So good to be back, Spain was knocked out of the soccer world cup last night, as to with Cameroon but before they bowed out of the competition 2 players had a go at each other leading to the head butt (well played Africa, well played).

Onto a more interesting topic, Hot Ride Shootout. This is the last match of the semi – final round and we believe it’s a great one to end off with, so sit back relax, read and get voting

Honda Civic Type R
This is will be one of the most radically styled hatchbacks ever. It looks more like a racer without the stickers and roll cage than a road car. And according to senior project designer Masaru Hasegawa, that’s exactly what Honda intended.

“The current Civic line-up isn’t very exciting, so we needed to come up with something for European Honda fans that also fits our performance heritage,” he told Auto Express. “Now, the Type R is aimed at the VW Golf R and Ford Focus RS. Those cars are subtle and more sophisticated-looking. But we wanted ours to be different and distinctive.”

Designers call it a “racing car for the road”, and the wild bodywork lives up to the billing. Dramatically flared wheel arches with vents behind them, an enormous rear wing with integrated LED brake lights and a full-width diffuser with quad exhausts make the Type R look more like a touring car than something designed to be driven every day.

BMW M 135i
BMW describes the shell as “unmistakeable” and the cars will certainly be on the shopping lists of younger buyers out there, especially with their twin-scroll turbos.

The cars are rear-wheel drive (which is unique in the segment) – and the three-litre M135i is described as “a top-ranking vehicle thanks to its straight-six petrol engine with M Performance technology, M precision-engineered and high-performance chassis and optimised aerodynamics” carrying an exclusive cabin design and the passenger doors have fancy frameless windows.

If frameless windows don’t do the trick for you how about the Fuel-saving stop/start which is available across the range which, apart from the M car, will come in a choice of standard, Sport Line, Urban or M Sport spec and the EfficientDynamics technology package incorporates EcoPro, invoked through what BMW calls a Driving Experience Control button.

The two-door is described as having increased agility and driving comfort over the previous model as well as a more spacious cabin and the rear seats can be set for two or three people. BMW says: “The exclusive look and feel of the interior, the wide range of standard features as well as many optional driver assistance systems and BMW ConnectedDrive mobility services underscore its premium status and progressive character.”

SEMI FINAL 1: Opel OPC vs Mitsubishi EVO

Image

So another long weekend, I hope you all enjoyed yourselves. The soccer world cup is well underway the same as our Hot Ride Shootout. This week is semi-finals week. Last week saw the demise of the STI (Whaaaaaat?) and the Merc A45 AMG! Not to worry as this week we start off with a bang. Take a look at the 2 opponents below and let us know which one receives your vote.

Opel OPC

If hot hatches are your thing, this could be the best ever. Arguably the ultimate expression from the Opel Performance Centre, the Astra Extreme packs a 2.0-liter turbo four with 300 horsepower, a six-speed stick and limited-slip differential underneath the most outlandishly extreme aero kit. Everything’s made of carbon fibre and the cabin’s stripped out for business to make it 220 pounds lighter than the standard Astra OPC and closer in spirit and appearance to the Astra OPC Cup that challenges on the track.

It’s a beast of a hot hatch if there ever was one

Mitsubishi Lancer EVO
The Evo X is still clearly a predator among the sheepish standard Lancer sedans, but less obviously than in previous iterations of the model. The new base Lancers share some of the Evo’s squinting stare with pinched headlamps and a scowling, full-frame grille that makes the Mitsubishi more intimidating than a prize fighter.

From anything but straight on from the front, the Evo is clearly no Lancer. Huge fender flares mean the Evo is 2 inches wider than standard Lancers, while the flat-topped crease above the fender bulge is appealing, premium and stylish. The lower portions of the flares are more rounded to allow a perfect blend of the Evo’s custom aluminium panels onto the standard Lancer shell.

Well it’s come down to the meat-eating part of this competition! Hope you’re hungry, ‘cos this one is RARE!

ROUND2: Match 4: Mazda 3 MPS vs BMW M 135i

Image

So here we ladies and gentlemen, the last Match Up of the Quarter Finals. Can you believe on Monday we will announce the cars which made it through to the semi-finals?? This match up will go the distance and we believe that this is gonna be a close call. Both of the cars in this match up were well tested in the previous round and it doesn’t get any easier for these two today. Enjoy, sit back, relax and get voting.

Mazda 3 MPS

The Mazda3 boasts a real stand-out design. The company’s styling ethos has really developed in past couple of years by various show and concept cars, which is being translated quite directly into production reality. There are swooping swage lines and a very bold facade. The MPS model is made even more in your- face by virtue of the monster air-scoop in the bonnet, which is large enough to make even a Subaru WRX feel shy. It seemingly has the desired effect for a performance car though, as slower drivers clear a path pretty quickly when they view the large “nostril” in their rear-view mirrors. There are 18-inch alloys and a lower ride height to create a squat, crouched down appearance. At the rear there is a double- level roof spoiler on the hatch, and housed below each corner of the bumper is a chrome exhaust tip. It’s a package that really does turn heads.

BMW M 135i
Straight onto the BMW, the performance potential of the BMW M135i as the Mazda is reflected in its individual exterior and interior design features. The front apron is typical of M styling that reflects the car’s secure and responsive road handling, with the large air intake vents needed to meet the cooling demands of a high-performance straight six-cylinder engine, auxiliary units and oversized brakes. The competitive character of the car can also be seen in the three-dimensional flaps on the outer air vents, a detail inspired by automobile racing. These air inlets take up the space reserved for the fog lights in the other versions of the three-door BMW 1 Series. They are separated by horizontal struts in Ferric Grey metallic – a design detail that distinguishes BMW M Performance cars.
BMW has described the shell as “unmistakeable” and the cars will certainly be on the shopping lists of younger buyers, especially with their twin-scroll turbos.
